The Acer Stream With HD Video Capture

The new Stream handset signals Acers second attempt at a mobile smartphone. Their previous effort, the Liquid A1 proved a disappointment, so what have the manufacturers taken on board to improve on with this impressive looking new handset.

For anybody familiar with the Android operating system that the Acer Stream uses, the first thing you will notice when using the handset is the layout of the screen. Acer seem to have made a conscious effort to re design the user interface, which does make a refreshing change from multiple homescreens. There is the option to switch back to the traditional Android version, however Acer's own attempt is very user friendly when you get used to it. The top part of the screen houses three columns, the central one showing alarms, date and time information. To the left of this is where you find all of your most recently used apps, and to the right is where you can access all of your media content. Beneath these columns there is a selection of icons that give access to the phones main functions. The Stream features a very comprehensive phonebook which allows you to enter multiple numbers for each contact as well as e mail, personal address and even IM nickname. One potentially useful feature is the ability to divert specific calls directly to voicemail. Call quality is very clear on the phone, whether made on speaker phone or in the traditional manner.

Connectivity options are superb on the Acer Stream. The handset is an ideal travel companion thanks to its Quadband GSM/GPRS and EDGE. Locally, WiFi is supported in the familiar B and G speeds as well as the faster new N speed. WiFi certainly offers the best online experience, this is however dependent on connection to either a private network or a public WiFi hotspot. The Stream impresses when it come to local connectivity. Bluetooth 2.1 allows wireless connection to compatible products and the familiar micro USB is also present to facilitate data transfer to and from your home PC. A less common but none the less extremely useful feature is the HDMI port, making watching your HD footage captured on the handset simple through you home television.

The Acer Stream is a breakthrough for the manufacturers, a big improvement on previous efforts which earn its right to compete directly with the big hitters such as HTC and Samsung.

The Acer Stream and the iPhone 4 White are coming soon.

IM is not the only thing which the N8 covers though as users can also integrate their e-mail inboxes with the phone so they are never far away from their incoming mail. SMS can be viewed as a conversation; MMS is also supported along with audio messaging. Social networking is a big part of the N8 experience with integrated feeds streamed direct to the home screen and dedicated apps for handheld account management.

The 12MP camera is one of the best in its class and boasts some pretty classy Carl Zeiss optics for good measure. A Xenon flash and AF have been thrown into the mix to give users the best opportunity to capture some truly great imagery. Video can be filmed in 720p HD quality while sharing your work is possible with the likes of Facebook and YouTube being compatible.

Nokia have equipped the N8 with a highly capable multimedia player which is adept to playing numerous types of video and audio files, on top of the already impressive 16GB of internal memory, users can upgrade to an additional 32GB via microSD card. A 3.5mm audio jack makes headphone use possible while the phone is Flash Lite 4.0 compatible so basic flash media will not trouble the N8.

Nokia have impressed with this phone; it is their highest spec effort so far, but you get the feeling this is just the beginning of a new era for the Finnish communications giants. The Nokia N8 is the best handset currently in Nokia's stable, but I am sure there will be more on the horizon.

The HTC Wildfire Featuring A 5 Mega Pixel Camera

A glance at the specification of the new HTC Wildfire and you would be forgiven for thinking that it was a new high end handset from HTC. However the Wildfire is the latest mid range offering from the manufacturer, and it will certainly have many supposedly higher specification models looking nervously over their shoulder.

The HTC Wildfire gain immediate bonus points for its use of the excellent Android operating system. Working on 2., Android has become the platform of choice for many smartphone fans thanks to the huge variety of applications available, without being tide in to the constraints of any one developer. HTC once again have chosen to incorporate their excellent "Sense" interface on the phone, making user operation very satisfying. With the popularity of social networking currently massive, HTC have acknowledged this my adding the clever Friendstream function which aggregates updates from sites such as Twitter and Facebook and places them all in the single application. HTC Caller ID also utilises social networking sites but for a different use. When receiving a call, the handset not only lets you know who is calling but also informs you of their latest updates, which could influence whether you accept the call or not. Although Android does offer a massive 7 homescreens where you can place your widgets, the Wildfires Leapview gives you an overview of all of these screens on a single page, letting you select the page you wish to view.

Media functionality is well represented on the HTC Wildfire. Whether you are looking to store audio, photographic or video files, thanks to the handsets microSD card slot which enables the user to add memory cards up to 32GB in size. Although not quite up to the standards of an iPod touch, the Wildfires audio player offers a very easy to master interface where cover art is displayed clearly. A multitude of file formats including MP3 and AAC+ are supported by the phone, which also benefits from a 3.5mm stereo jack plug. The camera facility offers a reasonable quality of picture for a mobile phone, with the added bonus of an LED flash for those moments when the lighting is just a little to dark for a clear picture. The Wildfire can also Geotag your photographs, putting a geographical position on every snap for future reference.

The HTC Wildfire manages to pack a huge range of features into its chassis for what is an ultra competitive price, meaning it will turn heads of not only newcomers to smartphones but seasoned users too.

The HTC Wildfire and the Nokia N8 Silver are available now.

Samsung Wave Featuring Bada

The Samsung wave S8500 is the first smart phone, with a touch screen which uses Samsung's "Bada" operating system and was released on the 1st of July 2010. The wave is a rather slim smart phone and uses Samsung's "Hummingbird" CPU, which comes with a stunning 720p HD screen, allowing you to record HD videos from your phone!

The phones front only has three "push" buttons, which are the pick up and hang up buttons, as well as the main menu button, you control the rest of the phone using its 3.3 inch touch screen. The touch screen comes with a anti smudge coating on top of the screen, which is great for preventing smudges on your touch screen.

The phone has a stunning 5 megapixel HD camera, as well as built in GPS and a 2/8gb internal storage, but allows you to enter a microSD memory card, allowing an additional 32GB of storage, plenty of room to store all of your videos, music and pictures! Along with this, it supports Bluetooth 3, as well built in wifi.

The wave comes preinstalled with Dolphin web browser, which does support flash, despite the fact it's disabled by default, this is due to flash causing web pages to load slower, if you do want to use the flash features on websites, you need to enable the flash feature.

Sadly Palringo instant messenger only supports Google talk and AOL messenger, there isn't currently any way to get MSN messenger / windows live messenger to work on the Samsung wave. which has put many instant messengers addicts off buying the phone.

After playing around with the Samsung wave's OS, I've found the iPhone and Andorid operating systems, to be a lot more powerful, despite the fact the S8500 has a lot of power in terms of hardware, but is sadly let down by Samsung's own operating system.

The Nokia N8: Can It Compete With Other Smartphones?

The Nokia N8 is out and is being touted as Nokia's answer to Android and Apple, being the very first Symbian smartphone manufactured by the company. However, the question is, can it really compete with the market space occupied by other smartphones, or even with its own predecessor N95?

The phone practically comes filled with every feature that one would want in a smartphone. Not only that, the smartphone is probably the best of what Nokia has given so far. The smartphone looks quite promising considering its looks and features. A smart camera, video facility, Dolby 5.1 and HDMI output, truly makes it a multimedia device.

The camera is probably one of the best features of the smartphone, where features such as color tone, white balance, contrast, flash control and ISO sensitivity can be easily adjusted. With 12 megapixel, auto-focus, xenon flash, mechanical shutter and Carl Zeiss optics, you can safely leave your digicam at home. You can even take HD videos using the same camera at an amazing 720p HD, much better than even what some of the digicams offer.

The device comes with 16 GB internal memory along with a MicroSD card of 32 GB, so you can safely play your movies in true HD. It also enables access to Ovi Music Unlimited Service for you to download and listen to your favorite music. The 3.5" touchscreen is an absolute delight in terms of display and effects, especially when watching movies or videos on YouTube.

The built-in graphics processor is pure joy for avid gamers. With new Web Browser, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth 3, FM Radio and 10 Mbps HSDPA, what more can one ask for. The only thing that can probably hold it back in the market is its user interface, which looks pretty outdated compared to other such devices. Supporting almost every email service out there, Nokia N8 truly looks to beat the competition.

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 Is Definitely Worth a Look

RIM have a reputation of providing great phones for the office, but other users are being ignored entirely. The phone has advanced multimedia for the entertainment users while support for web browsing and messaging comes as standard. You get a 5MP camera, GPS and access to the BlackBerry App World. This phone is most definitely one this year's bigger and better smartphones.

And by bigger I don't mean size. The phone is reasonably compact and very sleek; there is a slide down QWERTY keyboard which provides ample support for the various messaging formats the phone covers, you also get the famous optical track pad which can be found on almost every BlackBerry, ever! The real party piece here though is the capacitive touch; it is super responsive and very bright with a 480 x 360 pixel resolution which is capable of producing rich colours is a high contrast ratio.

BlackBerry users will find the Torch similar to older handsets; however the upgrade to the BlackBerry 6 OS does bring some obvious improvements in the performance category. The new interface brings with it some cool SNS integration features which includes live social network feeds.

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 is RIM's flagship model as it is the most capable smartphone in their stable. The phone uses HSDPA to connect to 3G networks with Wi Fi providing super fast web connectivity in local WLAN hotspot areas. The web browser is very lick and allows users to save bookmarks as branded shortcuts from the home screen. The ability to browser using tabs is only beaten by the in-browser controls which are supported by the screens capacitive technology.

Keen BlackBerry users expect full access to the popular BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) and the Torch 9800 delivers with aplomb, the IM client runs smoother and crisper than ever before on this advanced handset. You can access your e-mail accounts via a quick set up process and support for the mainstream IM providers, SMS and MMS are also in the standard package.

The 5MP camera just loves taking pictures; it is easily the best RIM have bolted onto one of their BlackBerry phones. The camera comes with flash and auto-focus and provides a number of choices where image editing and settings tools are concerned. The video player is capable of multiple format playback while the phones music player can play just about any audio file you run through it. An expandable memory allows you to build a collection of multimedia and applications while the phones Bluetooth technology enables the Torch to communicate wirelessly with compatible hardware devices.

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 is definitely worth a look; the phone has everything you could expect from a decent smartphone. RIM have come in leaps and abounds over the year of 2010; the Torch 9800 proves that they can cater to a mass market rather than a fixed demographic.

The Samsung Galaxy S Featuring Social Hub

Looking at the new Samsung Galaxy S, it is obvious that the manufacturer are targeting the high end smartphone market with this high specification model.

The first evidence of where this handset is pitched is in terms of the look. Thanks to its curved edges and glossy black plastic back panel, the phone is not a million miles away from the iPhone 3GS in terms of looks. The weight of the Galaxy S is very lightweight at 121 grammes, with both the materials used in construction and the screen technology combining to help produce this. Choosing to steer away from TFT displays has proved a very wise decision by Samsung. The Super AMOLED system used in this model not only uses minimal space, but helps produce a naturally vivid and rich picture quality. This method achieves its results by incorporating the touch sensitive sensors directly onto the display, rather than overlaying a separate sheet, which increases depth. This method seems so effective it is hard to envisage any other system being used on future handsets. The screen measures a large 4 inches from corner to corner, superb for browsing websites or viewing media, but inevitably adding vital millimetres onto the height and width of the phone. Thus for many consumers, it comes down to a simple decision of larger screen or smaller handset? Another great aspect of the display on this phone is its performance in sunlight, where it rates highly over many of its counterparts.

The Samsung Galaxy S works on the very impressive Android 2.1 operating system, however in a bid to add they're own twist to this, they have overlaid their own TouchWiz user interface in a bid to make user operation a much simpler affair. Perhaps the most topical feature of this interface is the way it combines social networking updates together in one easily manageable place. Named "Social Hub", it collaborates information from the likes of Facebook, Twitter and Myspace, saving time for the user who now need not log into each individual client in order to check what is happening around them. There are plenty of multimedia features on the Galaxy S to keep even the most demanding user occupied. Music albums are displayed with their cover art thanks to TouchWiz's media player. Video is captured at an impressive resolution of 720P, which in more simple terms is high definition. Not only does this feature make the Galaxy S a very "current" handset, it also offers ample opportunity to showcase the picture quality on the superb screen.

The Samsung Galaxy S seems destined to be one of the popular smartphones of the years, with the great screen and super fast operation making it a great choice for any prospective customers.

Samsung Fascinate - New Phone on Verizon

The Samsung Fascinate was released the 9th of September 2010. It's a rather light phone, weighing just under 120 grams, with a impressive 13 days of standby battery power, a lovely 4 inch touch screen display, although the phone only comes with 2gb of internal memory and this can of course be upgraded with a MicroSD card.

The Samsung fascinate was a lovely 720p video recording camera, which is great for such a light phone, amazingly the default search engine for the Samsung fascinate isn't Google, it's not even Yahoo, it in fact uses Bing by default, which is something new for Samsung.

The handset uses the Google Andriod OS, so it's quite strange that, the phone uses Google's phone OS, but doesn't have Google as the default search engine. In fact you can't even change your phone to use Google, now we've got no problem with Bing, but this is rather strange.

Annoyingly when I was playing around with the phone, it seemed to freeze up when doing, well some basic tasks, such as swapping between applications, or returning to the home screen. The features of this phone are great, but obviously Samsung just didn't spend the right amount of time making sure the phone and all it's features ran smoothly.

The sound quality was great, the speakerphone is able to go pretty loud without any loss of sound, on most phones if they get as load as this, it starts to distort and you have problems trying to make out what the other person was saying.

Overall, the phone is pretty good, but has a couple of faults and can be quite sluggish at times, it does freeze rather annoyingly, but overall is a OK phone if you can put up with it freezing and being slow!
